The modern mobile phone has opened doors to global communication and given access to a rapidly doubling virtual global library. However, it also has the ability to steal time better than the smoothest burglar.
As one with Luddite leanings I believe the mobile phone should used with a discerning discretion most of the time and completely turned off at other times. Here’s why…

Productivity coaches are all about getting things done. But they also promote a fixed quiet time every day to think, wonder, imagine and reflect. Mobile phones are turn off and distractions are removed for a maximum use of time. It’s therapeutic and productive.
Life coaches are all about making positive changes for a more meaningful life. They too promote a fixed quiet time every day to disengage from the days activities and gain mindfulness. This is often accomplished with meditation.
Breslov hassidim are all about being happy and connecting with God. They too promote a fixed quiet time every day for a healthy life. Their quiet time is personal prayer. For an hour every day they chat with God like they would a friend. They thank Him for the many blessings and talk about the ups and downs of the day. It’s a highly personal experience designed to increase awareness of God (aka emunah).
The common thread of these, and other wellness programs, is obviously the absolute importance for daily downtime for reflection, disengagement and/or connection to God.
It’s difficult to find that much needed mental tranquility or self composure if we’re constantly on the technology treadmill. Getting off the treadmill every day for personal prayer or mindful living can bring about a higher level of gratitude and inner contentment.
