Keeping all the mitzvot in our lives or even changing one bad habit is known to be challenging, and it’s like this by design.
Why?
Why did G-d make change, self-control, or self-improvement so difficult?
A primary reason is to teach us that we cannot do it alone and that we need G-d’s help to succeed.
G-d wants us to ask Him for help. To be the first place we go for help – not as a last resort. Our primary, go-to Source of solutions and to realize we cannot do it alone.
Taking it one level higher, G-d really, really wants to hear us ask for His help like it says in Pesachim 112a, “More than the calf wants to suckle the cow wants to nurse.”
Sample prayer:
“G-d, please help me to overcome my extreme laziness, I cannot do it alone. My laziness has damaged our shalom bayit and my work performance. I’ve tried for years to be better but with limited success. I get distracted with my phone or playing games over and over. I seriously need your help. It’s really bad. I lack self-control and have no idea how to be more industrious. Please help me.”
