4 Points of Teshuvah

Teshuvah is a positive mitzvah in the Torah and a great gift given to us from G-d.

There are four steps in the teshuvah process as outlined by the Rambam in the Mishneh Torah:

  • Regret : Regret is feeling sorry, disappointed, or distressed about one’s misdeed.
  • Abandonment or Leaving the Sin : This is the intention to never do the sin again.
  • Confession : Confession is an oral declaration to G-d typically including regret and the intent to never do the sin again.
  • Resolve or Acceptance for the Future : One’s resolve to not repeat the sin can be spoken with words or spoken in one’s heart.

This teshuvah process is easy to remember and only valid for sins between man and G-d.
