There is an old saying, “Man plans and G-d laughs” implying that G-d has an alternate (and better) plan for us and that His will shall prevail.
A few years ago I read there was a Chasidishe Rebbe who would say, “G-d’s greatest attribute is that he doesn’t laugh.” Coming from a Rebbe it was probably said in Yiddish and not English, but nonetheless, what is the Rebbe talking about?
Man might scoff and laugh at his friend’s yearly cycle of resolutions and failures — but not G-d!
G-d will never laugh when we return to Him even if it is over and over and over and over, and even if it’s all within a very short amount of time. He never laughs. Ever.
